How to Package and Ship an Injection Mold from China

An injection mold can pass its final trial and still arrive damaged if moving components, cooling ports, hot-runner connectors and steel surfaces are not protected for transport.

TL;DR

Clean and dry the mold, apply suitable corrosion protection, secure every moving mechanism, close and lock the mold, protect interfaces, use a load-rated export case and provide complete weight, lifting and document information.

Five shipping red flags

  1. The mold is packed while wet or contaminated with resin.
  2. Slides, ejectors or hydraulic components are left free to move.
  3. Hot-runner connectors and water ports are exposed.
  4. The wooden case has no load rating, lifting marks or internal restraint.
  5. Commercial documents describe the mold vaguely or inconsistently.

Pre-shipment release

Before packing, confirm:

  • final trial and acceptance status;
  • mold number and included components;
  • approved samples and reports;
  • controller, cables and spare parts;
  • drawings and water diagrams;
  • outstanding non-conformances;
  • net weight and center of gravity.

Cleaning and rust protection

Remove production residue, purge material and moisture. Protect core, cavity, plates and internal surfaces with a product compatible with the steel, resin and storage period. Chem-Trend explains general considerations for removing mold protectants.

Label the protection used and provide removal instructions.

Mechanical securing

  • Close the mold with appropriate cavity protection.
  • Install mold locks.
  • Secure slides, lifters and loose cylinders.
  • Retract or protect ejector components.
  • Cap cooling, hydraulic and pneumatic ports.
  • Protect locating ring, sprue bushing and connectors.
  • Bag and label removed accessories.

Export case

The base and case must support the mold weight and handling loads. Bolt or restrain the mold to prevent sliding. Mark lifting points, gross and net weight, dimensions, mold number, center of gravity and handling orientation.

Confirm destination requirements for solid-wood packaging or use compliant engineered wood where appropriate.

Documents

Prepare:

  • commercial invoice;
  • packing list;
  • contract or purchase-order reference;
  • certificate of origin when required;
  • test and acceptance records;
  • fumigation or wood-packaging documents where applicable;
  • photos before case closure;
  • controller and accessory list.

HS classification and used-goods rules

Injection or compression molds for rubber or plastics are commonly considered under HS 8480.71; mold bases are listed under HS 8480.20. Final national classification, duties and used-goods controls must be confirmed by the destination-country customs broker. The USITC tariff search illustrates national subdivisions for one market.

Delivery terms

Clarify EXW, FOB, CIF or another Incoterm in the quotation and contract. State who handles factory pickup, export clearance, port charges, insurance, destination clearance and unloading.

Arrival inspection

Photograph the unopened case, shock or damage indicators and all sides before opening. Check corrosion protection, locks, loose components and shipping damage. Compare included accessories with the packing list before installation.

FAQ

Can the mold be shipped without a wooden case?

Some specialized transport methods exist, but heavy precision tooling normally requires engineered restraint and environmental protection.

Should the hot-runner controller be packed in the same case?

It can be separately protected and inventoried. Prevent impact, moisture and cable damage.

Who confirms customs classification?

The importer’s licensed broker or competent customs adviser for the destination market.

Request an export packing plan

Provide mold dimensions, weight, destination, delivery term and accessory list. Require packing photographs and final documents before dispatch.
